About The Vrain Lab

The Vrain Lab is a hands-on engineering publication about infrastructure, homelabs, local AI, and practical experiments with real hardware.

This is a space for building, testing, breaking, and understanding technology—from physical machines and self-hosted services to distributed systems and local AI workloads.

The first series, Bare Metal Minds, documents experiments with local infrastructure, self-hosted AI, inference, and the hardware that makes it possible.

Why The Vrain Lab?

I created The Vrain Lab to explore how systems work beyond theory and documentation.

The focus is on practical engineering:

  • Building systems at home.
  • Testing ideas with real hardware.
  • Learning from failures.
  • Measuring trade-offs.
  • Documenting what worked and what did not.
  • Sharing the details that are often skipped.

There is no promise that every experiment will be elegant or production-ready. The goal is to understand the technology by working with it directly.

Build it. Break it. Understand it.

About me

I am Salvatore Milite, a software engineering professional based in Munich, Germany, and a father to one daughter.

When I am not working or spending time with my family, I enjoy experimenting with infrastructure, self-hosted services, local AI, and hardware at home.

My interests include backend engineering, distributed systems, Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure, data platforms, self-hosted services, and AI-assisted software development.

The Vrain Lab is my space for documenting those experiments—from the first installation to the inevitable debugging, failures, and lessons learned.
